Portrait Perfection

Cody & Becca

In good tradition, this post is a bit of a read (although not as bad as some), so get yourself a cup of coffee and prepare to read every mundane detail of my weekend.

Update! I’ve uploaded all the pictures for your viewing pleasure. Check them out here.

I’ve known Cody and Becca since January 2006 (wow, has it really been more than three years!?). They were our Neighbors when I lived in Elk Grove and came over to see what was going on the night we got a little crazy with some rum. From that night began the summer of nightly BBQ, wonderful weekends and perpetual tom-foolery (see examples here and here).

Since then they have been able to buy a home in Elk Grove, and start their family and while I was over for Dinner about a month ago they asked me if I would take some portraits. I was flattered and shortly we made plans to go up to the Hoffman cabin at Donner Lake for a weekend to have some fun and take the pictures.

I took all of Friday off so I would have time to get all my stuff together and take care of a few other nagging things around the house. I ended up  on the phone, going through emails and taking care of some paperwork though so I still worked part of the day. I made a trip up to my parents house as well to pickup my Camera (which Chadd had borrowed) and to show my Mom the Blog I setup for her (http://tracysnotes.com, more to come on that later though). and left from there straight to Cody and Becca’s house.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t what we hoped for when we planned the trip a month ago and it rained the entire drive up, we even had a few miles of light snow as we crested Donner Summit (~7,200 ft). Once we got to the cabin, and were settled, Cody and I passed time playing some board games and I did some reading before we turned in for the night.

We woke up fairly early Saturday to cloudy skies without rain and made a point to get out and start taking some pictures. We did have some very light rain (almost a mist) to deal with, and snow on the ground but I think overall we were able to get a lot of great shots in. I did a preliminary processing job on the photos so far, but they aren’t ready for prime-time yet, so I’ll save all that for a later post.

After we wrapped up our multi-location photo shoot we headed into Truckee to get groceries for the rest of the weekend. Cody and I stopped in the local bookstore and did some quick perusing, but didn’t end up finding anything interesting. We all headed back to the cabin for one last set of pictures (indoors) and lunch. Becca made fabulous sandwiches while Cody and I played a game of Arkham Horror. I did some more reading, and played more games. Cody and I even managed to play one round of Axis and Allies before dinner. Again, Becca made a delicious Pesto Ravioli meal while Cody and I played (noticing a trend here?). We all played Coloretto, Yahtzee and watched SNL before going back to bed with the rain pouring outside.

I got up Sunday morning around 8am and intended to make a pot of coffee, but all I could find was decaf and a bag of Peet’s coffee dated Aug 2007 so I gave up, and decided to read some more of my book. When Becca got up a little later she ended up making some of the Decaf (turned out to be all there was) and scrambled eggs with toast for breakfast (by the end of the trip Cody and I were feeling pretty guilty that she kept doing all the work while we played). Cody and I played a few more games and after lunch we packed everything up to head home.

All-in-all it was a great trip in spite of the rain. We were able to get the portraits done that we wanted to do and I read a few chapters in my book but mostly I had a great time relaxing with friends.

Forza 2

I’m not a heavy gamer. I enjoy games. Mostly on the computer though. Most of the games I play on consoles are with groups of people. The one exception has always been racing games.

[fa:p:a=blog-images,id=529866558,j=l,s=s,l=p]The first game I can remember playing in detail, was Street Rod 2. It was a DOS game, released in 1990 and I probably played a couple hours a day during the summer when we had it. In writing this post, I was able to find it as a download over at abandonia.com. I have yet to download and try it, but I think its going to require setting up DOSBox or a DosVM to get it to run.

[fa:p:a=blog-images,id=529910351,j=l,s=s,l=p]More modernly, Forza, for the Original XBox grabbed the attention of many people as one of the most well developed car physics games to ever be released. With a large list of cars (not quite as many as GT) I always had a blast playing it. Making super cars out of old Toyota sprinters and the like. Now, Forza 2 is available, and although its still very similar to the original Forza in game play, the online play has been an absolute blast and it has had me yearning for a steering wheel and pedals to play with. The image to the left is one mans setup that has me drooling. Although Forza 2 has support for 3 screens built in, it still requires 3-360’s. So I don’t think it’ll be happening for me anytime soon. As well, I’m not good enough, dedicated enough, or rich enough to afford the Bob Earl VRC racing seat. But the wheel by itself is a reachable prospect, so don’t be surprised if sometime in the not so distant future if you see me with one.

Wonderfull Weekends

This post may get a bit lengthy, since I still haven’t mentioned much about the birthday party; I’ll do my best to keep it interesting.

First though, Happy Birthday to Dave Hampton! (Maybe if I try really hard to mention him enough I’ll end up on his “Links of Great Blogness” ;-) )

Starting with the party, which really had no definite beginning so I’ll actually start in the early morning when we (My household and the Neighbors Cody and Becca) had a garage sale and smoked ribs on the smoker that Angelo at work gave me (Thanks!). I sold a total of 3 things, but actually ended up coming out ahead by quite a bit. I sold one of my two mountain bikes for $35, a DVD player for $5 and Nicks Wheels and Tires for $150 ($50 of which I got to keep). But of much more importance the smoked ribs turned out awesome.

The ribs were a fairly simple recipe, I rubbed some beef ribs with the McCormick Hickory Spice Rub the day before, fired up the smoker with beer in the basting bowl and some hickory wood chips for smoke. Smoked for about 3.5 hours at around 220 degrees, and tada! Delicious ribs.

After we finished the garage sale we cleaned everything up and started preparing for the party, we got Cody’s audio equipment setup and the band was sound checked around 6. Becca, Ricko and her boyfriend as well as Becca’s Sister went out and bought snack foods and did a great job of putting together a whole slew of munchies so a big Thanks to all of them!

The party itself went great, the band sounded a million times better live than in the recording that I have a few posts below. In such a small space as my living room was the vocals had to be turned way up to be heard over the drums, so in the recordings below its pretty much all vocals. Oh well, everybody who was there knows what they sounded like.

I was surprisingly not hung-over on Sunday, the benefit of sticking to mostly beer so cleanup of the house went rather smoothly, and my parents came down so we could go out and see The Da Vinci Code, and later Chadd joined us to go out to dinner at Outback. In all it was probably the best birthday one could wish for.

This weekend (which was a 4 day weekend for me!) was equally as good. Mike and Jenn went up to Humboldt for the weekend, and Nick wasn’t home much so for the most part I had the house to myself. I went to two of The Usuals shows, one at The Distillery in Sacramento which was good, but not their best show (more the venue’s fault than their own) and the second at the Owl Club in Old Roseville which is the best one I’ve seen yet.

I also successfully went the entire weekend eating Smoked/BBQ’d meat for dinner every night. Did some experimenting, some of it turned out great, some needed a little extra help. Smoked New York (with a peanut butter sauce) Friday night, BBQ’d chicken Saturday, smoked chicken Sunday, and smoked ribs last night.

TV-2.jpgIn other news though, I got my TV and installed it. I found a stand that just about perfectly fit in the opening I have. I say just about because it required a little bit of modification to actually get it to fit. I ended up buying a Skill Saw, and cutting off 1/4″ on both sides of the stand to get it in. It looks awesome though, almost like the nook was built for the TV instead of the other way around. I got antsy about having some kind of source that would do the monitor justice, so I bought an Xbox 360 (the Premium box, not the core set). Had to buy a wireless adapter too for it, but downloading HD trailers and playing games look incredible. So if you have a 360, check my gamertag, and add me as a friend.

Hampton Bay Lasserre Patio FurnitureAnd lastly, another purchase I made this weekend (I went a little nuts :-P ) was of a set of patio furniture that I just couldn’t pass up the price. It was marked down 20%, and then I got another 10% off of that because I signed up for the Home Depot Credit Card. So the final price (after tax) was under $400 for 6 chairs and a large glass toped table. (Click the image for a slightly larger view).

Birthday Wishlist

Well this is a little bit of a work in progress. But my birthday is coming up (May 21st, mark your calendars B)) and a few people have asked me for some ideas. Some of them are more of a long term want list because they are to expensive to ask somebody to get me, but it should help with ideas.

Bush wins … but of much more importance is the fact that I’m actually posting in my Blog. For those of you who are regular visitors to http://www.dormlife.us (my main site) who have wandered here though the new link at the top I welcome you. I put a lot of hours (to many really) into the theme that I’m using right now and I’m pretty pround of how it came out. I’m still not quite finished integrating it into this blog though so you may notice for a while that things may look a bit funny until I get the visual elements all consistant.

Since I already made a post to the form detailing the work I’ve done, and whats left I’m not going to repeat it here, you can read it in the Annoucements or click this direct link.

I’d like to give recognition to a few Blogs that have inspired me to want to do this (although I am no match to them). Both are friends in San Luis Obispo going to Cal Poly:

Warrior Bob (Dave) has an increadably witty, blog centered more around his life and the games and computers that make up a majority thereof. You can find his blog at http://www.warriorbob.com

“Satire, boobies, and beer” is the tagline of Dan’s Blog, and an appropriate title at that. I dont think I can encapsalate Dan’s essance in a description so just go visit for yourself http://www.dankoleary.com
