Fancy Formatting

I’ve been going through all my old themes and plugins and migrating them into github repositories (more to come on that later, including an updated projects page). In doing so, I remembered a feature that I had added to a style I created called Evincere. Original credit (as far as I can tell) goes to Kirk Montgomery who used it on his Sawchuk Scheme.

Basically, the idea is to provide a large number of pre-formatted paragraph eye candy that can be used anywhere in the site. The icon in the paragraphs are from Mark James’s silk icon set. I’ve added it to this theme so without further adieu:

Notepad++ is My New Favorite Editor

I’ve always had creative instincts. But god forgot to bless me with any sort of traditional creative talent. I am a poor writer, my stick figures lack punch and sheet music scares me.

What I do know how to do though, is write code. And to me elegant, functional code is an art. I don’t mean to elude that I am some sort of code writing god. Often my code is far from elegant and sometimes even non-functional. But when things come together I still get a warm satisfaction after successfully developing an application.

Before & After: A Tale of Data Cabling

BeforeAfter

Saturday, I tackled a beast.

It wasn’t anything of insane epic porportions, and in reality it only took a couple hours but I felt like sharing.

The picture on the far left is of a clients data rack (after I removed the non-functional and abandonded equipment). Long story short, this is what happens when you don’t have a clear plan, or a single person to make decisions.

There were more problems than the obvious mess:

  • Troubleshooting connectivity problems with this tangled mess can make a grown man cry.
  • With so much extra cable in such a tangled mess, your chances of Alien Crosstalk goes up, which ultimately means poor network performance.
  • The weight of the unsupported cable puts kinks in the cables at the plugs, as well as can damage the connections resulting in poor conductivity (again, ultimately poor network performance).
  • Its not apparent (and took me nearly an hour to fully navigate) but the switches on this rack (and there are 5 in use) are daisy chained together, which means that the network had severe bottlenecks, as well, if a device in the middle of the chain were to fail, everything below it would stop working.

The simple solution, get the right sized patch cables for the job. In my case, I was able to layout the equipment in such a way that I could do just about everything with 1′ patch cables. I also re-structured the topography into a star with the switch at the very top of the rack acting as the center of my star. It does unfortunatly mean I still have a single point of failure that could take down the network, but if any one of the other switches fail only devices connected directly to that switch will go down, so I see it as an improvement. Rebuilding the topography also means I don’t have the same bottlenecking problem I had before. Internal traffic now has a maximum of three hops, as opposed to the potentially 6 hops in the prior design.

I’ve asked the client to keep an eye on things, see if the improvements are actually noticable or not. They han’t had any serious problems before so I won’t be supprised if the changes are not readily noticable to the end users. If they do though, it’ll be in the voice quality of their VoIP phone system. At the moment on busy days they get a noticable degredation of the voice quality, and without QoS capable switches there isn’t anything I can do besides hope the drop in packet loss due to the rebuild is enough to subdue the problem until I can get new switches.

Scion United Event

Today was the day. The Scion United Event. Its been a long day, but I’ll do my best to recap completely without rambling. It was pretty awesome.

Kerry and I started the day with a nice and easy breakfast from the coffee shop in the hotel and took a short shuttle ride into the main village here. Its basically an outdoor mall with lots of little shops, kind touristy but at the same time appealing to the people who actually live here. There is also a casino here. Nothing large, but it has all the usual slot machines and tables. We spent a short amount of time making our donation to the Nevada gaming commission before wrapping up the rest of our free time in an Irish pub.

THE PUB!

Once we got to the event, the fun and swag started rolling. They had a few extremely unique cars parked right in front, it looked like at least some of them were corporately owned, but one or two of them may have been other peoples cars. Everything was in tents to at least provide some shade, and there were carts all around with free water, chips, pretzels, ice creams etc to keep everybody cool.

I straight away went to the tent where they were giving out free stuff to the owners. I got a shift knob, and the Scion carbon fiber B-pillar inserts along with some stickers and whatnot. Kerry and I also made a round in the tent where all the 3rd party companies were. More awesome corporate scions and free swag (pens, lanyards etc). There were a few items worth noting though. Alpine had a decibel booth setup where you could go into a small room, and they’d crank up the sound system to reach nearly 145dB. (thats roughly 10x louder than a jet engine BTW). TRD had a booth in this tent as well, and they had THE BEST swag to offer, a set of wheels were to be raffled off at 6:30 (or so the sign said, and the people at the booth told me, but more on that later). They were also doing a live installation of a TRD supercharger in an xD xB right there in the tent.

Damn, thats loud

We toured more of the cars on display, merchandise etc. I stopped by one booth and meet Chris Rado and Ken Gushi. I ventured into the “Paint a Scion” tent, mostly because I was boggled as to what this meant when I read it on the list of things to do. It turned out that they had ceramic xB’s and paint so you could create your own custom xB. Mine came out looking like a 2 year old made it, so I don’t have any pictures of it.

Pioneer had a cool tent as well, they had a live DJ spinning sounds, and video that was projected in 360° on the domed ceiling. I tried to take pictures, but the tent was lit to look cool to a human eye, and my camera couldn’t make sense of it. We also got t-shirts custom made for us (we chose the colors and designs and they silk screened the shirts right there).

After spending a few hours touring everything we got off our feet at the hospitality tent (which was air-conditioned) and drank some water and munched on some snacks for about half an hour. When about 6:25 rolled around, I walked over to the TRD booth for the raffle and was completely disappointed. Turns out, whoever was running the event asked TRD to move the raffle up to 6:15, but forgot to tell anyone. So the winners were chosen, but you had to be present to win, so a ton of people were likely skipped and a few people got quite upset at the debacle.

Dinner was served around 7:30. We had salad, green beans, potatoes au gratin, turkey & roast beef. I was pretty famished, and I think Kerry was too, because both of us polished off our plates. Scion gave out more raffle items during dinner (non of which I won) and after a cake desert, herded us onto the main stage, where the mysterious secret event was to hold place.

The secret was threefold as it turns out. The major item (and something I somewhat expected) was the unveiling of the Scion xD RS1. I was in a horrible spot for taking pictures of it, so I apologies, but I was told I would get a chance to see it up close tomorrow, so I’ll get better pictures then. The other two events weren’t really my style, but it was fun all the same. They had Redman and then Flow Rider perform on stage (both are rappers for those that don’t know).

Flow Rider

So after a very long day, and a bus ride back to the hotel I spent some time here going through the pictures (you can see all of them from the day here) and writing this entry. So I’m going to log off for the night, and get some rest. I have a long drive home tomorrow.

Support Pink for October

Pink for October

Web sites will Go Pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, get people talking about breast cancer, and raise money for research.

But to be clear, raising money isn’t the primary purpose of this web event.

The hope is that you turn your site pink (in whatever way works for your site), go out to that World Wide Web thing (in fact you’re on it right now! :) ) and educate yourself about the multiple issues related to Breast Cancer, then take that newfound knowledge and tell someone else what you’ve learned.

Please join me in going Pink for October. I’ve created a K2 style for the occasion, and a plugin to show your support for the event.

First Site Using Evincere

shotssnapcom.jpg

http://liulei.name/ is the first blog I know of (besides mine) that is using Evincere. Its kind of exciting! Except that I can’t read anything posted on the blog (without the help of a translator), and it appears that the owner of the blog removed the line at the footer that credits me with its creation (BOOO!)

But Technorati caught the link as a reaction before it was removed.

Why Mac’s Suck

My buddy Chris came over the other night (we are practically neighbors now, but thats for another post) and showed me this video. Its well worth the 3 min viewing.

Are you a Physics or Math Major?

Then you may get a kick out of these. I laughed so hard at work then when I finally got to the last one and started crying, the receptionist came back to make sure I was OK!

An interesting post

I was perusing the internet, as I am known to do on occasion, and came across the Earthling blog ( and in particular, this post which contains images of things that my not be immediatly recognizable. So I thought: “Hmm… I could do something similar and kill two birds with one stone, see who visits the site regularly, and I can play with lightbox some more”.

So … with that said; I present you with a few Artifacts from Indemnity. If I can think of a worthwhile prize for any particular items I’ll let you guys know.

Happy Birthday Jessica!

I don’t know if she reads my blog at all, I think the only reason she will be on here is to read about the hike. But her birthday is today, and so I thought I would take a second to wish her Happy B-Day.
