Landed

My first vacation in two years has started off – for lack of a better word – slow. But that’s expected of modern travel … isn’t it?

Had everything worked out perfectly I would have taken a bus last night from Seattle-Tacoma Airport to Bellingham, WA. But things don’t always work out ‘perfect’ and the flight ran late in complete disregard to the slim window I had to make it from the plane to the bus which departed promptly at 9pm. The next bus wasn’t scheduled to leave until after 11pm, and was already full.

I’m staying for a week with my Uncle Mike and Paul for both work and pleasure. In the end, Uncle Mike drove down to pick me up from the airport. A 3.5 hour round-trip drive that was supposed to have been avoided via the aforementioned bus. We made it home around 1am, had a bowl of ice cream, chatted a bit and went to bed.

The “work” part of this trip involves installing a structured media system in Uncle Mike and Paul’s new home. All the wiring is (added when the house was built) so I don’t expect any back-breaking work. Most of the work is placing pieces of equipment in and on walls in the correct place and connecting the correct wires.

I’ve been planning this system for a while now. Although the ultimate plan I came up with was bitchen (excuse the language) it was too much work. It would have required pulling new wires (quite a few) all over the house and was, in the end, simplified such that we will be able to just place equipment. I’m storing the design away for use on the fictitious home I plan to buy with my imaginary lottery winnings though.

I sit this morning in the spacious living room after a late night with my laptop and a cup of coffee, listening to the multitude of birds in the small forest just in back of the home. I’ll be running into town soon to pickup all the equipment and getting the project started. I have plans to meet up with friends on Saturday, a trip to Vancouver B.C. either Friday or Sunday and a day’s visit to Seattle on Tuesday before my flight leaves.

I am very much looking forward to all of this.

Pondering a Trip

leave a comment

15 years ago in late November, I set out on a trip, a trip I’ve pondered re-creating for years.

Myself, Russel Friedrichs, Aaron Clark, Rand Sevilla and our fathers (Larry Klaus, Keith Friendrichs, Milt Clark and Roland Sevilla) strapped everything we needed for a week to our backs and made a walked 50-miles from the south rim of the Grand Canyon, to the north rim and back again. We had spent more than a year preparing for the hike so we knew what we were doing and except for some some foul weather on the North rim which held us one extra night on the canyon floor, we all made it without much trouble.

I can recount many fond memories from that trip, it was the first 50+ mile backpacking trip I had ever done (I was 11 at the time) and it inspired me to do many more long treks. A few years after the Grand Canyon trip I did a 50 mile trip in the Northern Sierras. I did 50 miles at Philmont (New Mexico) in 1998, 100 miles in 2001 and 50 miles again in 2003 (you can watch the 2001 trip on YouTube). Since then, I’ve done some trips with Paul, Matt & Travis Lockyer in the Sierra’s and contrary to any complaints I made at the time, every trip was challenging, exciting and wholly worth the effort. In the last 4 years though, my nights on the trail have steadily diminished, and I miss it. I’ve got back in-shape lately (through fits and starts) and the warm sunny weather, long daylight hours and even longer working hours all have me yearning to spend a week away from computers, phones and multitudes of people.

I don’t believe there is time to plan and prepare for a rim-to-rim-to-rim trip in the Grand Canyon for 2010. I’m not even sure who would join me yet, it takes a pretty serious commitment of time and money to make a trip like this happen. However, I can start planning for a Fall 2011 trip, which is exactly what I intend to do. The logistics of the trip itself are fairly simple, and most of it wont fall into place until 4-months before the real hike (the furthest out we can get a permit). It’s the mental and physical prep that takes time, finding extended weekends to do shake-down trips and conditioning trips is difficult for a group of working Adults. I want to start planning now to have a hike every other month, starting small and working ourselves back into the swing of backpacking.

This could be the start of a very good thing.

Rugby Sevens

leave a comment

Here is the full report on my vacation. I do have to warn you that it gets a little bit long winded, but it does after all cover three days. I will split the post up into some pages and there are plenty of pictures for those who don’t like to read. So click on the “Read More” link and join me for a recount of rugby, beer, nachos, snow and very long drives.

Saturday morning I woke up well rested – even though the bed borders on hard – around 7:30. Kerry and I meet with Liz, Mark and Candice and headed downstairs for breakfast, then finally to the field which is only a few minutes drive away.

DSC_9732 DSC_9734 DSC_9737 DSC_9740

We found some of our other friends a the park and sat with them at about mid field, which would have been great seats except that there was a very large boom camera right in front of us. It was generally ok for just watching the game, but I was anxious to take pictures so after not to long I spotted an empty section at the end of the field and set out to find some better locations to for pictures. I’m really glad I did too, because often after I leave a game that I took pictures of, I realize I never left my seat, and every picture is from the same angle. Lame.

I wandered about for the first 7 or so games, found myself getting told I couldn’t be in a few places and in the end had pictures from 4 different spots, as well as some general pictures of the people, events and things around the game. The 7th game was USA vs. South Africa and although I wanted to take a ton of pictures of that game, not a whole lot happed even though it was a close game the entire time. In the end USA lost to South Africa by 1 and I headed back to meet up with Kerry with my head down.

Snail on the Wall DSC_9757 DSC_9791 DSC_9825 DSC_9777

It was a beautiful day and the USA-SA game ended a little before noon so a group of us headed over to the fan zone where they had tents setup with things to see, buy and eat. The South Africans in the group (all but myself and one other) headed straight to the meat pies for lunch. The pies were from Mojo Pies and actually pretty good. Kerry and Candice complained about there not being any place that sells pies in our area, even though I pointed out Z-Pies a few times (sigh…).

DSC_9884

We headed back to watch the rest of the games, I didn’t do much wandering after that since I think some people were getting the wrong impression that I didn’t want to sit with them. USA and South Africa both played two more games before the day was over. USA won both games over Australia and Canada. South African also won their other two games for the day as well. After all the games Kerry and I took Mark & Liz back to the hotel and we joined up with the rest of our group to get some drinks and pizza at a small bar near the stadium. Kerry and I headed in for the night around 9pm. We were both absolutely beat and I only had enough energy to post up some of the better pictures from the day and go to bed.

Sunday morning was much the same, we made it to the park first this time, and after getting the same seats from the day before we went to get some merchandise. I had purchased a USA shirt on Saturday and was sporting it, but I lacked a hat. Saturday I just wore a springbok hat, but that simply wouldn’t do with the USA shirt. So $20 later I had a USA Sevens hat.

Sunday was all bracket play, based on how the teams had done on Saturday. Below bracket for the Cup as it started on Sunday morning.

DSC_9917

The weather Sunday wasn’t as good as the day before. The sky was overcast and there was a good enough chance of rain that the boom camera had a plastic bag protecting it. Luckily the weather held with nothing more than a gloomy overcast and a bone chilling breeze. We ended up moving over a few sections to get away from the large boom camera, so I had a better angle for pictures, and wasn’t as enthusiastic about moving around in the cold. I also tried to pay more attention to the rules of the game and how things played out but I didn’t keep much track of scores or anything like that for any games except the cup semifinals.

DSC_0086 DSC_0011 DSC_0006 DSC_9926 CIMG0531

The only way that South Africa and USA were going to meet again was for the Cup final so I was kind of hoping that would happen. It would make for a really exciting day. Both teams made it past the first semi-finals round without much trouble. The second round South Africa was up first, against England and while at the end of the first half it looked like they would have the game, they made a few mistakes in their play and gave the game to England. We met a nice English guy who sat in front of us who was kind enough to gloat.

DSC_0127

USA vs Argentina was up next and at this point all the South Africans I was with switched to USA mode. Argentina came out first if I remember right but USA had them by a few points near the end of the game. But with only about a minute to go, Argentina scored a try and wasted all but the last few seconds of the game with their conversion kick and return kick. Their return kick went out of bounds with a second or so left on the clock, but the sideline official didn’t get his flag up until after the horn sounded, so the main official nearly immediately ended the game. It wasn’t how I wanted to see the USA team go out, to what I consider a bad call. The USA team never got a chance for one last try that they deserved.

In the end Argentina went on to win the Cup and everybody celebrated with them. We didn’t linger long at the stadium and decided we wanted something to eat. So Kerry, Candice, Liz, Mark and I headed out to a California Pizza Kitchen in La Jolla. Each of us ordered our own pizza and we were all hungry enough that not a single slice remained on the table when we left.

It was again not all that late by the time we got to the hotel, but its amazing how tired you can get after sitting out all day cheering for your favorite teams. I sat down and started to compose this post, but an unfortunate combination of beer, nachos, and pizza made for a disgruntled stomach and I had to lay down, eventually I fell asleep with no more than a few paragraphs written.

Monday we slept in a bit, and quickly packed everything up, grabbed a bite to eat from the hotel (for me just a cup of coffee and a dry bagel) and headed for home. We had to make a quick pit stop for Kerry’s car, the night before the oil dummy light flashed at us, and it turned out that the car needed 4 whole quarts of oil, which isn’t good. We had also found out in the morning that the Grapevine was closed due to snow and ice.

For anybody who doesn’t know California’s interstate and highway system. I5 is the major north south road through California and the grapevine is a mountain pass at the southwest end of the Tehachapi Mountains linking Southern to Central California that rises to 4.100+ feet and during the winter it occasionally gets snowfall. Unfortunately, the pass is so long, and so many lanes that road crews often cannot keep up with it, and the pass has to be closed.

map

That meant very bad news for us headed home. The best feasible route around that pass means going all the way out to Highway 101, which roughly follows the coast from Los Angeles to San Francisco. We took 101 up to San Luis Obispo and then cut back over to I5. It was a 2 hour detour that made our long drive from San Diego, into a VERY long drive. Particularly because there was heavy traffic on 101 nearly the entire trip.

We were able to break the trip up a little bit with a stop at The African Hut (a South African foods importer) and the Springbok bar in Long Beach for lunch. Kerry and I alternated driving a few times which always makes long drives go easier, but next time I think we will just fly. We got home around midnight and Kerry was in bed before I parked the car, I wasn’t long in following her.

In all, it was a great trip, and I look forward to trips like it in the future, but perhaps next time we’ll try to plan a little further in advance and get a hotel in downtown San Diego, within walking distance of the Stadium, and fly instead of drive.

I’d also like to point out that I crossed the 10,000 picture line with my D50 during this trip. I took nearly 500 pictures during the trip, and it may be a bit before I get through processing a majority of them so look for posts in the future with some photo highlights.

Too Tired to Post

Its only 10:30 at night, but I’m tired, and sun-burnt and don’t have the enthusiasm to make a full post as is needed. So for now, I’ll hold you off with this slew of pictures I took today. Sorry for the poor processing job, all I have on my laptop is Picasa, which isn’t usually my first choice for processing images.

To San Diego

So I mentioned in my last post about the snow that Kerry and I were headed somewhere, but I didn’t say where. Every year around this time is the USA Sevens tournament and this year Kerry and I are joining the rest of her family to go to San Diego and watch the tournament.

The Sevens is a small format Rugby tournament designed (I believe) to make for faster play. But don’t take my word on it. I am by no means a Rugby fan.

So shortly after leaving Cameron Park Kerry and I made a stop in Folsom for some food and fuel. We met up with Mark, Liz and Candice and set out for San Diego. Kerry did most of the driving. We alternated a couple time but I can’t seem to go for more than a couple hours without my right knee starting to hurt.

The drive down was mostly uneventful which isn’t rare of Interstate 5 through central California. We did hit snow over the Grapevine though which was pretty cool.

IMG_0060

I was able to listen to about a quarter of book four in the wheel of time series during the drive. I expect I will finish the book on the way home and get a few chapters into the fifth.

The biggest news of the trip was our passing through LA. Kerry’s GPS doesn’t do traffic so it routed us straight through on I5 which was a mistake. It took us almost 4 hours to pass through. Partially due to it being Friday and rush hour and partially from bad weather.

We got to the hotel at about 9:30, roughly 11 hours after we left Cameron Park. We are staying at the Lafayette Hotel in San Diego which is only a few minutes from PETCO Park where the rugby matches are held. After a short time getting settled in the hotel, the group of us headed up the street to Denny’s for dinner. We had a live CSI show at the coin shop next door where apparently somebody tried to rob the place earlier in the day. Mostly though it was just a bunch of cops standing around.

After dinner we all pretty much retired to bed. It’s amazing how draining it can be to simply drive all day. I stayed up a bit processing the pictures from the day and watching Road Trip on HBO until about midnight when my eyes simply wouldn’t stay open any longer.

Welcome, 2009

8 … 7 … 6 … 5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1 … HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Backing up though, my new year celebrations didn’t start out all that great when Kerry changed our plans at the last miniute. Candice had been talking about celebrating down in Long Beach at the South African Bar thats down there but neither Kerry nor I had the money to make the trip. I was also talking with Keith and Matt about celebrating in the Bay Area (where Matt lives) so when Kerry finally told Candice that we wouldn’t be going I made arangements for us to spend the night at Matt’s place.

Well, I guess Candice wasn’t going to be able to go on her own down to LA so Kerry’s Mom twisted her arm and offered to pay for the hotels if she would go with her sister down to LA. However, that didn’t really fix the other problem I had with going to LA, I had to work on New Years Eve until about noon, and be on-call Friday. There was simply no way I was going to drive 16 hours for one night in LA, even if it meant I wasn’t going to be able to celebrate the new year with Kerry.

So I picked up Travis from Shingle Springs after I finished up my morning job, and we made the trip out to Oakland. We got to Matt’s place around 5pm so we killed a few hours with the XBox. The original plan was to head into San Francisco and bar hop over there, but since we were a realativly small group (Matt, Kelly, Travis and Myself) we decided it would just be easier to bar hop locally which turned out great since Matt & Kelly live within walking distance of a bunch of bars.

We headed out to get some dinner around 7pm at Filippos, a corner Itallian resturant that I highly recomend to anybody. I had the Ravioli di Spinaci with their homeade alfredo, it was amazingly good. Matt, Kelly and Travis shared a bottle of wine with their meal, I stuck to water. Wine seems to often give me hearburn, so I figured it would be a bad way to start a night of drinking.

We then headed up the street to George & Walts, a sports bar on College Ave. It was dead in there. Including ourselves and the bar staff there was maybe 12 pleople in the bar, and the median age was hovering somewhere around 55. We got a pitch of beer anyway and played a game of pool. Travis and I skooled Matt and Kelly. More people started comming in the bar as we finished up our game, but it was time to move on to another bar.

Our next stop was up the street a bit at a bar who’s name escapes me. We didn’t stay long, all of us were in need of cash, but the ATM at the bar wasn’t working, so we shortly headed back out to get some cash at an ATM around the corner.

After getting some cash out, we stopped into another bar (again, I’m hoping Matt will pop in here and tell me the names) for another pitcher. Again, not a ton of time spent there, enough to enjoy the pitcher and move on.

Our finaly stop was at Water. And compared to the other three bars, this place almost felt snobby. The nice thing though, is that Matt and Kelly are regulars there and although it was small, we were all able to sit at the bar. This is where the bulk of the drinking for the night happend. I had a Margarita on the rocks, some similar mixed drink that Matt recomended, a rum and coke and obviously a glass of Champaign. Matt & Travis started with that mixed drink I mentioned earlier, then they both had a milky absynth (AKA, the Green Fairy). Travis threw in a shot of Taquilla somwhere too and they both had Champaign. I think Kelly stuck mostly to Champaign.

Water Bar Bar Line Matt & Travis The Gang

We ran into a couple of friends of Kelly’s, Steve and Sarah (hopefully I remembered their names right). They seemed like a fun couple and it was nice to meet them. We brought in the new year at Water and Travis stole a kiss from the bartender with really nice hair. We stuck around for a little while then headed home, making a short stop at Kelly’s dad’s place to wish him a Happy New Year.

We got home just about in time too, because the alcohol caught up with Travis in a bad way and he spent a bit of time “purging the demon”.

I woke up with little more than a headache at around 8am. Travis on the other hand looked a little worse, and was definitely hung over. Kelly wasn’t feeling 100% either. We watched some Myth Busters and Always Sunny episodes while we all waited for excedrin to make things better. Keith and Meghann showed up around noon, and Keith, Meghann Matt and I went out to pickup takeout Chinese food while Travis and Kelly recovered.

Hangover DSC_9464 Keith St. Filippos, Oakland

After lunch, we played a couple rounds of Balderdash (Keith and Meghann won) and we hung out for a bit. We had dinner at Filippos again. I un-originally ordered the same thing I had the previous night (it was too good to pass up). And after another short period back at Matt’s place, Keith, Meghann, Travis and I all headed to Meghann’s place in Davis. She gave us (Travis and I) a quick tour of the place but we didn’t stay. Keith took Travis, and I headed home where I fairly promptly went to bed.

Backpacking Checklist

leave a comment

This list is put together by my buddy Chris, but there have been many times when I wanted to have a sanity checklist to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything so I thought I would post it up so that you can maybe use it in the future, and so I can come back to it on other occasions. Don’t be surprised if I make comments or edit the post as I realize things do and don’t work for me, etc.

I recommend keeping all of the “smelly stuff” (sun block, toothpaste, small snacks… anything sweet smelling) in a single small bag. It makes it easier to find your stuff in the bear bag.

Try to stay away from cotton at all costs. Compared to its synthetic brethren, cotton takes forever to dry out and can suck away important heat from your body. Not a big deal in the dry, hot locations. However, wet cotton turns a peaceful rain storm into a life threatening situation. Synthetics may not absorb smell very well, but every body else is going to smell just as bad as you.

I’ve updated the list to include some group gear, as it was pointed out to be missing

Fishn’ Trip

leave a comment

I’m a little late on this posting, but there were a lot of pictures and I wanted to make sure I got this up so I can explain some, and point out my favorites. Tom put this trip together and made all the aragements, which was a nice change (not having to plan anything beside myself). He did a great job too.

Tom, Claudia, Nick and Mike Jones drove to Lee Vining Thursday morning and meet with two of Tom’s friends (who’s names escape me). They were able to get some fishing in on Thursday, and all day Friday in stocked rivers, so we had plenty of fish for eating by the time Kerry, Candice and I got there Friday evening.

I was able to spend my second night ever in the bivy I bought well over a year ago. And although it was windy as heck, I was quite comfortable. I am trying to make arrangements to take it with me on an upcoming backpacking trip.

Anyway, Saturday we headed out to Tuolumne Meadows (which is in Yosemite) for some fishing. I don’t know the name of the river we walked up, but we went a good couple of miles up the river, I only caught one fish on the way up. When we got as far as we felt like going we stopped and a few jumped into the river (which was a perfect temperature) for a quick swim.

On the way back down is where I had the most fun. I caught two more trout (Tom and I had a small competition going on, he ended up winning with 4 caught). Since we were in a National Park, we didn’t keep any of the fish, and I didn’t seem to get a picture of a single one of them, but the trip was more about getting out than fishing to me anyway. Kerry didn’t bode so well on the fishing, she wasn’t able to catch anything which is always disappointing. But I think she still had fun until the last quarter of the way back when I think she got a bit dehydrated.

We spent Saturday night playing Uno, and drinking beer. I ended up kicking one of my sharp tent stakes with my bare foot (this was before the beer), and took a nice big chunk out of the bottom of my foot.

Sunday morning we slept in, packed up and headed home. It was a fun trip, and I was glad to get out of the house, and out of town for a weekend.

Universal Studios, Hollywood

leave a comment

[fa:p:a=6-16-universal-studios,id=562488893,j=l,s=s,l=i]The last day of our trip. We got up in plenty of time to make it to the park when it opened, we even got front row parking. Kerry and I have both been to Universal Studios, but its been about 5 years for both of us, so it was still a lot of fun. As is customary with most people, we did the Backlot Tour first. Its changed a bit since the last time I went. The “Broken Bridge” isn’t used anymore (which is ok, since it was lame anyway). And a few new things are added. They kept the airplane crash set from War of the Worlds, and its pretty amazing to see it, since it was such a strong scene in the movie (you can see it here, as the background to the website). The other thing they added was a Fast and the Furious special Effects demo, in which they demonstrate how to blow up two cars. While the pictures I took are cool, they don’t really do the demonstration any justice, so check out this video that somebody else took on their trip:

Kerry and I rode and watched just about everything at the park, but we didn’t waste much time because we wanted to try to make it back to the Springbok bar again and get that meal we had been craving. So we left Universal and drove back up 101 to Van Nuys and this time we were able to get a nice table and some food. Kerry had a Boerewors Sandwich (pronoced Bord-a-vors, its a traditional South African all-beef sausage), and I had Freestate Braai Pack (Braai meaning BBQ) which was boerewors, two lamb chops and a 5 ounce Filet Mignon. I really enjoyed it, especially seeing the excitement on Kerry’s face to be able to have food and drink from home again (did I mention she drank 3 Savanna Dry’s and a Castle Lager, all made in SA).

[fa:p:a=6-16-universal-studios,id=562502483,j=r,s=s,l=p]We made a drive after eating to go see some of Hollywood, but we out of cash, and even change to park and the sun was setting so all we really did was drive around on Hollywood Blvd, and Sunset Blvd and then we explored the tiny roads that go up the mountain that the Hollywood sign is on (trying to get a closer look at the sign). We didn’t make it there before the sun set, and there are no lights on the Hollywood sign, so I had to expose the picture heavily for it to come out so excuse the grain (Yes, I took that picture while it was dark out… isn’t Photoshop wonderfull)

San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park

leave a comment

[fa:p:a=6-15-wild-animal-park,id=562009372,j=l,s=s,l=i]We had Dinner last night at an Applebees here in San Diego, and did some swimming before we went to bed. But we woke early this morning in order to make it out to the park as the gates opened. It wasn’t as cool as I was expecting for San Diego (although technically, we never were in the city limits), but it was still great weather compared to what we had been through for the rest of the trip. I was able to use my 70-300MM lens almost exclusively in the park, which was a blast. I love the lens, it allows me to get really intimate pictures without having to be close, like this, this or this.

I’m not sure there is a whole lot to say about the park though. Its a nice facility but its pretty much exclusively animals. I did quite enjoy that they have the large basin of non-predatory animals with a tour that goes around the outside stopping for people to take pictures and with a guide telling about the animals. I would have really loved to do one of their special tours, that puts you on the back of a truck and you drive out into the basin. It would have made for some really amazing pictures I’m sure, but since it cost more than the entire fee to get into the park (and Kerry and I unknowingly had 2-day passes) I just couldn’t bring myself to pay.

[fa:p:a=6-15-wild-animal-park,id=562421275,j=r,s=s,l=p]We toured just about everything there was to tour in the park, ate lunch (quite good hamburgers at a decent price for park food), did some perusing of the shops and eventually headed out of the park to get on the road again. We headed north, not to far, into Long Beach from the Wild Animal Park to make a quick stop at the Springbok bar, a South African bar. We didn’t stay long. Only long enough really for me to have a Coke, and Kerry to have a Savanna Dry (a SA hard cider). I convinced Kerry we would have dinner at the other Springbok bar near our hotel (a mistake in the end).

So after our short visit, we battled through LA traffic to get to Van Nuys, where our hotel and the other Springbok were located. We dropped off our stuff at the motel (a nice looking, but the sleaziest feeling Super 8 I’ve ever stayed in). I dilly-dallied for a bit, importing and processing the pictures from the park and by the time we made it to the Springbok bar, it was packed and we ended up not eating there, much to Kerry’s dismay. We stopped and got Carl’s Jr on the way back to the motel, and went to bed without our South African meal.
